Introduction to Permaculture Design
Nathan Huntley This presentation serves as a brief overview of the Permaculture design process. Starting with ethics and principals, Nathan takes the audience through designs that harmonize with the natural ecology to provide for the needs of human communities. The slideshow includes both the designs and their implementation on the landscape at Edgewise Farms, Nathan’s permaculture homestead and demonstration site in Caddo County, Oklahoma. The presentation will include the basics of: climate, water and access, design for energy (wind, water, sun etc) management, design to maximize labor and output, systems integration and whole systems thinking, hydrology and earthworks, soil care on small and large scales, livestock systems, appropriate technology, and food forest design and management. This presentation is not a class in itself but is designed to pique curiosity toward further investigation. To that end, Nathan will ask the audience to write questions they have on note cards during the presentation. Having collected them after the presentation, Nathan responds to each one with links, copies of sides, book recommendations etc. to help his audience begin their personal journey. Nathan Huntley is a Permaculture designer, consultant, teacher, homesteader, and the sole proprietor of Edgewise Farms LLC. Nathan received his Permaculture Design Certificate fromthe Permaculture Research Institute in Australia in 2018 after having completed an extensive course taught by Geoff Lawton. Nathan has also completed the Permaculture Implementation Program from William Horvath, Verge Permaculture’s Perennial Plant Propagation Master Class taught by Sean Dembrosky, as well as Permaculture Gardening with Matt Powers. Areas of informal study include: Rocket Stove technology, hydrology, Key Line design, rotational grazing,multi-species grazing, Bio-char, aquaponics, foraging, and recipe creation. |
