“Nutrient Cycling” focuses on fresh research in soil science coming from the invention of a new, very powerful, and inexpensive LED microscope. This recent invention has led to an explosion in soil knowledge and resulted in many improvements to the ways we can interact with our gardens, our bodies, and the world at large. Most of this knowledge has been made practical only on the large scale. “Nutrient Cycling” scales this knowledge to a practical scale for any sized garden.

The slideshow itself focuses on the benefits of aligning our gardens, and our home environments, with living beings. It presents the advantages of fostering these already symbiotic relationships. Using illustrations of the science and photos of these techniques in action, you will learn how to take your household waste streams and unwanted plants (“weeds”) and turn them into better gardens by supporting the life that supports you. More importantly, the slideshow illustrates a way of thinking that connects these waste[AC1] streams with human-allied organisms, so that you can design systems that work for you, in your context.

Nathan Huntley is a Permaculture designer, consultant, teacher, homesteader, and the sole proprietor of Edgewise Farms LLC. Nathan received his Permaculture Design Certificate from the Permaculture Research Institute in Australia in 2018 after having completed an extensive course taught by Geoff Lawton. Nathan has also completed the Permaculture Implementation Program from William Horvath, Verge Permaculture’s Perennial Plant Propagation Master Class taught by Sean Dembrosky, as well as Permaculture Gardening with Matt Powers. Areas of informal study include: Rocket Stove technology, hydrology, Key Line design, rotational grazing, multi-species grazing, Bio-char, aquaponics, foraging, and recipe creation.

Nathan lives and works on Edgewise Farms in Caddo County with his amazing wife Allyson and their intrepid 9-year-old son, Ezra.
